At 2.4 lb in the 10×12 shooter cut, the 3802C is the lightest rifle-rated plate in the HESCO lineup. It delivers NIJ .06 Certified Level III standalone protection on 800 Series advanced composite construction — the same material platform behind some of HESCO’s most advanced plates — at a weight that patrol officers, plainclothes professionals, and daily wear users can sustain across a full shift.

Understanding the Protection Decision

A useful starting point for any armor selection discussion is the P210 — HESCO’s Enhanced Pistol Threat plate at 1.0 lb. It represents the lightest standalone protection available and covers the full pistol threat spectrum. For professionals who need rifle protection, the question becomes how much weight is acceptable to add, and what rifle threats need to be covered.

The 3802C answers that question for professionals who need certified rifle coverage — including core 5.56 and AK-47 threats, M80 (.308 NATO), and 30.06 JSP — at a weight still suitable for daily wear. Moving to the 3810 or 3612 adds M855/green tip coverage but also adds meaningful weight. The table below illustrates that progression.

The key trade-off: The 3802C covers core rifle threats including M80 (.308 NATO) and 30.06 JSP at 2.4 lb. Adding M855/green tip coverage requires moving to the 3810 or 3612 at 3.8-3.9 lb. That 1.4 lb difference per plate is the weight cost of M855 protection. For units where M855 is a credible daily threat, that weight is justified. For professionals and units prioritizing daily wearability with meaningful rifle protection, the 3802C is the right answer.

Some high-end users and well-equipped units maintain multiple plate sets — a lighter daily wear option like the 3802C for sustained patrol or plainclothes work, and a heavier certified Level III+ set for elevated threat situations. That approach reflects the same logic that drives the rest of a tactical kit: the right tool for the right situation.
